PickleMagazine
is Marjolein Busstra, Bob Verbruggen, Thomas Kuijpers and Peter
Tijhuis. In 2011, during our final year of the Master’s
program in documentary photography at AKV| St. Joost we decided
to launch Pickle Magazine.
We developed
this online magazine to give insight into our creative processes
and hope to create a platform for ourselves and our projects.
The idea is as follows. The research phase of photography, when
many decisions and editing choices are made, is rarely available
for an audience. This process is, however, one of the most interesting
and informative aspects of a work.
Every issue
has a theme and around this theme a photography professional is
invited to write an introduction. All the editing is done collectively
which more often than not results in unexpected associations between
the different projects.

As a documentary
photographer Marjolein Busstra wants to develop a new
language for today’s sensation-oriented media environment.
She works with universal themes like; human rights, dislocation,
and political and cultural exclusion. With her projects she encounters
the different ways of telling a story to unravel identity structures
and representations.

Peter Tijhuis
uses photography to research the behavior of people in relation
to their (urban) environment. To research this relationship, a
thorough understanding of the fluctuating borders between public
and private is essential. Usually people and their behavior are
clearly visible, sometimes their presence is only felt indirectly,
but not seen. To fully understand the dynamics in a city and how
this relates to people, Peter feels that you need to have a historical
awareness. Archival material seems to find a way into his work.

Thomas Kuijpers’
work is situated around the broad theme of 'truth'. He's interested
in the way truth is constructed and he is searching for moments
where something that isn't considered to be true, can change and
become truth - or vice versa. By trying to reveal these constructs,
Kuijpers is constantly questioning the value of the concept of
truth on different topics. Kuijpers makes us understand that there
is no actual truth, only a lot of different voices claiming it.

Bob Verbruggen's
work explores the clash between Borders and Boundaries, and the
role imagery plays in this power struggle, through the media photography,
film and text. He collects images from both high and low cultural
expressions. He indexes, redefines and then uses this "collage"
as an instrument to intervene in the conflict at hand and reveal
the power structures that clash in the conflict area. Verbruggen
seeks an active role within the discourse using himself as an
instrument of provocation.
